France Transit Visa comes into the short-stay visa type. It is for foreign passengers who make a short stay in the international zone of a French airport to travel to another place. With a France Transit visa, you can only access the international zone of a French airport. You may not enter Schengen territory.
You need this visa because Schengen law DOES NOT ALLOW foreigners to travel/stay in the French international zone without the visa.
The France Transit visa varies depending on your:
- The purpose of your travel
- Means of transport
The types are as follows:
- Air companies’ staff members’ visa
- An airport transit visa, “A-visa.”
- Seafarer’s transit visa
There are three types of France Transit visa by the entrance
- A one-way transit visa, which allows one-way transit through a Schengen country;
- A return Transit visa, which allows returning airport transit through one or two Schengen countries;
- A multiple Transit visa which allows various transits through one or more Schengen countries.
France Transit vs. France Tourist Visa
Both of these visas come with short-stay visas. The documents, requirements, fees, and procedure is the same.
You can use the France tourist visa to explore or visit 25 Schengen states. But you can pass through France by a Transit visa to your final destination.
Who Needs a France Transit Visa?
Foreigners who NEED a France Transit Visa to transit through a French airport to another destination are citizens of the following countries:

Iran | Palestinians who have a travel document for a refugee that has been issued by Egypt, Lebanon, or Syria. |

Angola | Ethiopia | Libya | Somalia |
Chad | Ghana | Mali | South Sudan |
Republic of Congo | Guinea | Mauritania | Sudan |
The Democratic Republic of Congo | Guinea Bissau | Nigeria | Togo |
Since July 23rd, 2018, Indian nationals don’t need the France Transit visa. But they need a short-stay visa to leave French airports and visit France.

France Transit Visa Exemptions
You can be a national of the above countries but can be exempt from applying for a France Transit visa. The foreign nationals who don’t need a France Transit visa regardless of their nationality:
- The people who have a diplomatic or service passport.
- Airline crew members who are nationals of a state party to the Chicago Convention;
- Those who have a valid residence permit issued by EU/EEA members;
- The people who have a residence permit issued by the Principality of:

Canada | Iceland | Holy See |
The United States of America | Liechtenstein | San Marino |
The residence permit must guarantee the unrestricted right of return.
The people who have a valid visa or a member state of:
EU | The US |
EEA | Japan |
The family members of a citizen of:
EU | EEA | Switzerland |
- The people who have a valid:
- Schengen visa
- Residence permit or long-stay national visa issued by a Schengen state.
France Transit visa does not apply for you if:
- You must pick up your baggage or check-in again
- Applicants are transiting through two or more airports in the Schengen Countries
- You have an open ticket.

What are the Required Documents for France Transit Visa?
Aside from the general requirements for a France visa, you need these documents to apply for a France Transit Visa:
- Passport. It must:
- Got issued in the past ten years,
- Valid for more than three months beyond your travel.
- Have at least two empty pages
- Undamaged
Get a copy of the passport data page.
- A France short-stay visa application form.
- Two photos.
- The visa of the country you will travel to + a copy.
- A reserved round-trip flight ticket.
- A Cover letter from your employer, in case you are traveling for your work. It should say the reason you travel is related to your business.
- The full travel itinerary
- A cover letter from you if you are traveling for private reasons. It must explain the purpose of your travel.
- If your children or family members live out of your home country, provide a complete list of them.
Requirements for seafarers
- A cover letter from you to explain the purpose of your travel. It must be signed.
- A valid visa/resident permit of the country you will travel to + a copy.
- The documents explaining the purpose of your traveling:
- A letter of appointment. A work contract that shows the ship’s nationality.
- An invitation letter from a port agent/cruise company in France.
- A confirmation letter issued from the shipping company that hired the candidate. It must show your travel purpose. (stamped and signed)
- Your records book as a seafarer.
- Seafarer’s certificate (valid).
- Former visas in the past three years with entry stamps
- Schengen visa
- US visa
- UK visa
- Canadian visa
- A medical document that shows your health status. It must show you have no dangerous/transmittable disease that could threaten the public.
