The Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent, also known as RP-T, is a recent type of Malaysian work permit. A Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent is a work visa that grants the holder a stay of up to ten years. In addition, applicants of this permit can stay in the country without being dependent on a specific employer, and it is also renewable.

However, not all applicants can obtain this Pass. A Malaysian Residence Pass is only allocated to talented foreign workers. Foreigners must fulfill certain criteria. That is why this type of Pass is often called a Malaysian Talent Pass or Talent Visa. Lastly, foreign workers who have already moved to Malaysia can apply for the Residence Pass-Talent.

What are the Benefits of a Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent?

Several benefits come with Malaysia country Residence Pass-Talent, such as:

  • Foreign nationals can bring their spouse and children (under 18) to Malaysia.
  • Foreigners are allowed to work and study, although only the spouse is allowed to work.
  • The Pass holder can bring their parents and children (over 18) to Malaysia. They can stay in the country for up to five years by obtaining a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass.

Who is Eligible for the Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent?

To be considered eligible for a Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent, foreign workers must meet the following requirements. These workers must:

  • Have a valid Malaysia Employment Pass (EP) and have lived in Malaysia for at least three years.
  • Have at least three more months of validity on their Employment Pass.
  • Be a high-achieving professional worker who can help develop Malaysia’s economy.
  • Have work experience of a minimum of five years.
  • Get paid at least RM15,000 per month, excluding bonuses and allowances.
  • Have academic qualifications from a recognized educational institution.
  • Have a Malaysian income tax file number.
  • Have proof of paying Malaysian income tax for at least 2 years.

The following industries are considered as “key economic areas.” Workers in these industries have a higher chance of receiving a Malaysia Residence Pass:

What are the Required Documents of the Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent?

Foreigners must have the following documents when applying for a Malaysian Residence Pass:

  • Visit Pass application form (IMM12)
  • Residence Pass application form (IMM16)
  • A declaration form from a Malaysian sponsor to support the applicant’s Residence Pass application.
  • A No Objection Letter from the applicant’s current employer.
  • Copies of all the pages of the applicant’s passport
  • Pictures
    • Three pictures
    • Pictures must be passport-sized
    • Pictures must have a light blue background
  • Copies of educational certificates
  • A copy work contract
  • Applicant’s resume’ and CV
  • Copy of salary slips related to the last three months
  • Copy of tax declaration slip related to the past two years
  • Letters of recommendation

If applicants want to bring their spouses or dependent children, they must have additional documents, such as:

  • Copies of all the pages of the dependents’ passports.
  • A copy of the marriage or birth certificate. The Malaysian Embassy must certify copies of these certificates as a Certified True Copy (CTC).
  • Pictures of dependents
    • Three pictures of each person
    • Pictures must be passport-sized
    • Pictures must have a light blue background

Note: All documents must be translated into English, and both the original and copies of documents have to be submitted. The list above is not a complete list of required documents. How Can I Apply for Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent?

Malaysia Expatriate Talent Service Centre (MYXpats Centre) is responsible for processing Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent applications. Foreign nationals must visit the talentcorp website and submit their application online. On this website, applicants can also attach all the required documents.

Then, they have to pay the required fee and submit their passport to the Malaysian Immigration Department to receive the Residence Pass sticker.

How Much is the Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent Fee?

The processing fee for a Malaysia Residence Pass-Talent Fee is RM300 at the time of application. This fee must be paid online using a Visa or MasterCard. When the Residence Pass is processed, applicants must also pay an additional RM2,000 per application to get it issued.

What are the Other Categories of Malaysia Residence Pass?

Foreign nationals of the following categories can also apply for a Malaysia Residence Pass, according to the Immigration Department of Malaysia:

  • Family members of Malaysian citizens, such as:
    • A legal spouse
    • Children who are 18 and under the age of 18
    • Biological parents
    • Parents-in-law who have a valid Pass in Malaysia
    • To be considered eligible, family members of Malaysian citizens must have lived for at least three years in Malaysia with a valid Pass.
  • Family members of Permanent Residents of Malaysia
    • A legal spouse
    • Children who are 18 and under the age of 18
    • In order to be considered eligible, family members of Malaysian Permanent Residents must have lived for at least five years in Malaysia with a valid Pass.
  • Ex-Malaysian citizens who:
    • Renounced their citizenship
    • Lost their citizenship

In all cases mentioned above, the applicants must have a Malaysian sponsor supporting them. Sponsors must be at least 21 years old. All Malaysian citizens who are over 21 years old are eligible to be sponsors.

The categories of applicants, which are listed above, must:

  1. Visit an office of the Malaysian Immigration Department in Putrajaya or other near Immigration offices in person.
  2. Submit their applications for Residence Passes along with the required documents. The applicants and their sponsors must be present for the application process.

Using the Residence Pass in this instance, applicants can work, study, and open a business in Malaysia without having to obtain a work or study permit.

Required Documents for Other Categories of Malaysia Residence Pass

Applying for a Malaysia Residence Pass requires various documents. Applicant must visit an Immigration office in Malaysia and submit the following documents:

  • Form IMM16a (Residence Pass application form)
  • Photocopy of all pages of their current and all previous passports.
  • Pictures (Must be two pictures that are passport-size)
  • A copy of the applicant’s sponsor’s ID card.

Then, based on their status, applicants must submit additional documents, such as:

  • A copy of the marriage certificate for spouses.
  • A copy of the birth certificate or adoption papers for children (biological/adopted)
  • For a Malaysian citizen’s genetic parents:
    • A copy of the birth certificate of their Malaysian child.
    • Photocopy of their Malaysian child’s ID card.
    • Photocopy of their marriage certificate.
  • For a Malaysian citizen’s spouse/child:
    • Two ID card copies of the Malaysian citizen’s spouse or parent.
  • For spouse or child of a Malaysian PR holder:
    • A copy of the identity card (MyPR) of the spouse/parent’s Permanent Residence.
  • For ex-Malaysian citizens:
    • Photocopy of their passport and any previously-owned passports.
    • A birth certificate copy
    • An original copy of the Declaration of Renunciation of Malaysian Citizenship (Form Y/K) OR a photocopy of the Order of Forfeiture of Malaysian Citizenship.

Certified True Copies (CTC) of birth and marriage certificates from countries other than Malaysia are required by the respective country’s embassy.

All collected documents must be translated into English. If not, the applicants must have them translated and submit both the original and copies.
