In response to a request from a Ukrainian refugee family on Facebook, Grant Shapps, a UK minister, has taken in six-year-old Altas, his mother, grandmother, and their dog.
The UK extended a warm welcome to a Ukrainian refugee family
Shapps is among more than 100,000 Britons who have signed up for a government program to connect war refugees fleeing Ukraine with families who can offer them shelter for at least six months.
After heavy criticism of the government’s approach to allowing refugees into Britain from campaigners and opposition lawmakers, the scheme was announced earlier this month.
The European Union, which shares a land border with Ukraine, is less restrictive than the United Kingdom when it comes to security checks and visas.
The family who contacted Shapps said they had a few outstanding visa issues to resolve before they could visit but that they were looking forward to welcoming them to their home as soon as possible.
On Wednesday, Shapps told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that “we talked about it as a family, and it will mean the house is more crowded and there won’t be room for a desk to study at.”
In each of these conversations, we always thought, “But what’s happening to these people and what’s happening to their home?”.”
