Do EU nationals need a visa or residence permit?

The residents and nationals of the EU do not need a visa to enter Denmark. They do not need a residence permit to stay in the country for up to 90 days. So if the study course takes up to 90 days, they do not need a residence permit. But if the course takes longer than 3 months, they need to apply for a permit to stay longer.

Denmark student visa requirements

The list of requirements or supporting documents for a Denmark student visa is as follows:

Language proficiency certificate

The language requirements are up to the university, and you need to find out what language the course will be provided in.

Paid visa fees

Keep the receipt of paid visa fees.

Proof of having enough funds.

Submit bank statements or any other proof that you have 1.000 EUR for each month of your stay in Denmark.

Acceptance letter from your university or education center

It is the first and foremost requirement you need to prepare. When you receive the letter, you can begin the application process.

Application form

There are two types of application forms, online and paper. The one you complete is up to you. You can find out more about it in the below section.

Passport

It must be valid over the date your course will end in Denmark for at least six months. If it’s not, you need to receive a new one.

Photo

You need one or two photos of yourself in passport size. They must be new and taken in the latest three months.

Travel Insurance

It must cover all of your expenses during the trip until you get to Denmark and your student insurance becomes available.

Proof of accommodation

Make it clear where you will stay while you are in a Denmark dormitory or a rented place.

Denmark student visa application process 

The application process for a Denmark student visa is as follows:

Step 1. Receive acceptance from a Danish university or education center

The first step to applying for a Danish student visa is to get accepted by a danish university, college, or education center. You need to find out which university offers a related program. Prepare the requirements and apply them.

After you receive the acceptance, you can apply for the visa.

Step 2. Create a case order ID

Applicants need to create an account on the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) website. When entering the site, pick the “Higher education” part” section and include the details. You need a verified email address to that you have access to the password. When you fill it in, you will receive your Case ID, which you need in your application process.

Then there is a fee you need to pay. So prepare your credit or debit card. You need to enter your Case ID in the field to pay. The fee for a Denmark student visa changes every year and is determined on January 1st.

Step 3. Collect the required supporting documents for the Denmark student visa

There is a list of required documents for a Denmark student visa. They are to prove that you are eligible to receive a visa and study in the country. The first one of them is needed to begin the application process, which is the acceptance letter.

You have to complete the online application form on the SIRI website. The point is that the university or educational center needs to complete the first part of the online application. Once they complete their part, the website provides a reference number—the university news to send you this number so you can continue completing the form.

You also need to attach the documents, and the digital scanned ones are required. Prepare the documents in advance and ensure they are according to the instructions.

Paper application form

You need to complete the first part of the paper application, and the educational center or university needs to complete the second part.

Two versions of the paper application are provided in the following section. You can complete the Word format on your computer and then print it, but you should print the PDF one and then complete it.

Step 5. Submit the application form to the officials

At this stage, you need to submit the application to the Danish officials. There are two scenarios here;

The online application form

In case you have completed the online application form, your application will be submitted automatically. You just need to submit your biometrics to the Danish officials.

You need to find the nearest Danish embassy or consulate in your home country that manages the visa issuance. Often, you might have to apply to Norway embassy as the two governments have close connections and have assigned tasks.

Can you apply for a student visa from inside Denmark?

Yes. If you reside in Denmark legally, you can apply for a student visa and submit your biometrics to the officials. However, your residence in Denmark must be legal under one of the following circumstances:

• Have a valid visa
• Hold a valid residence permit
• Are exempt from the visa requirements due to conditions.

Step 6. Receiving an answer from the Denmark officials

It takes some time until the officials decide on your Denmark student visa application. The process is up to different factors, such as the country you apply from and whether your documents are complete or not.

When the decision is made, the officials inform you. If they have rejected your visa, they will send you a letter that explains the reason for rejection. Here you can remove the obstacles and apply again or take the case to court and appeal.

When the embassy approves the visa, they’ll notify you to pick the visa up. You need to visit the embassy in person to pick up the visa stick to your passport or send the passport to the embassy to do it so. The way is up to the embassy.

Step 7. Registering address in Denmark

When you enter Denmark under a student visa, you need to register your address with the local municipality officials of the city you live in. You need to bring some of the documents that you used to apply, and the authorities will grant you a Danish CPR number or Personal Registration Number. Applicants need to have the CPR number, and without it, the residence won’t be legal.

You can open a bank account, use the library or get a membership card for your gym by the CPR number.

The required processing time for a Denmark student visa is up to different factors, but you can expect a two months duration. You should apply as early as possible to catch up with your course and not miss anything. In case the embassy requires further documents, the processing time could be longer.
