UAE Employment Visa Rules
To be eligible for UAE Work Visa, you must meet the following requirements, as must the company that hires you:
- Minimum age of 18 is required;
- The company license must be valid;
- There must be no violations with regard to the company,
- The work you do must be in keeping with the nature of the company hiring you.
Who is considered eligible for a UAE Work Visa?
UAE employment is open to any foreigner who is at least 18 years old and who meets Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation standards (MoHRE). In the UAE, there is no upper age limit on employment, but employers pay more for employees over 65.
According to their academic credentials/skillsets, foreign workers can be divided into three categories:
- A bachelor’s degree is required for entry into Category 1.
- A post-secondary diploma in any field is required for entry into Category 2.
- A high school diploma is required for entry into Category 3.
What documents do you require for a UAE employment visa?
Many supporting documents are needed when applying for an employment visa in the UAE, such as your:
- Original passport and a copy of the passport, as required by the UAE.
- A passport-size photograph.
- Your academic transcripts should be included. For your qualifications to be accepted, they must be approved by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in your country as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- A medical certificate from a UAE health center that the country’s government has approved.
- Documents from the company that hired you, such as the commercial license or the business card of the company
A certificate of good conduct is no longer required until further notice under UAE’s new employment visa rules for 2018.

How Am I Eligible to Apply for a Work Permit in the UAE?
Think of the process of acquiring a UAE work permit in three simple steps: obtaining an employment entry visa, acquiring an Emirates ID card (also known as a Residency Card), and obtaining a work and immigration permit for residence.
The Application Process of a UAE Work Permit
A pink visa is another name for an entry visa for work in the United Arab Emirates. Obtaining this permit begins with an application for visa quota approval by the employer. The Ministry of Labor must grant this approval (MOL).
The next part is for the employer to submit a contract of employment to the MOL. The potential employee must sign this contract.
Before a UAE work visa can be issued, the Ministry of Labor must approve the work permit application. Two months after receiving approval and obtaining a visa, the employee will be able to travel to the United Arab Emirates.
An employee who enters the UAE on a pink visa has 60 days to apply for a residence visa and a formal work permit before leaving the country.
Obtaining an Emirates Identification Card
Medical screening employees will require an Emirates ID in order to apply for a residence visa. An entry visa, an original passport, and a copy are required when applying for an ID. If you want to work for Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), you’ll have to provide fingerprints and a photo in person.
Resident Visa
If you want to apply for a residence visa, you’ll need all of those papers mentioned earlier. In the UAE, a residency visa is good for up to three years and can be extended at any time. The work permit of the employee will be included in the residency visa.
The employee can begin working as soon as his or her work permit is approved.
Costs of work permits in the United Arab Emirates
Your employer should cover the cost of obtaining a work permit. The level of skill you’re working at will determine the amount you will have to pay.
Level 1 employees have bachelor’s degrees or the equivalent. Doctors, accountants, and teachers are examples of occupations that fall under this category. The cost of a visa is AED 300.
Level 2 has four subcategories. People with diplomas and those working in trades like mechanics make up a large portion of this group. The price tag varies from AED 500 to AED 2,000, depending on the package you choose.
The fee is AED 5,000 for those with lower qualifications (such as those in administrative positions).
Medical tests, legal fees, and translation expenses can all raise these costs. They are all possible increases. You need AED 5,000 to UAE work visas every two years for people 65 and older.

Getting a UAE Work Visa for Dubai
It’s the same process for all seven emirates, including Dubai: you need to get an employment visa for any emirate to apply for one in Dubai. These are some examples:
- A job in Dubai (either while on a UAE Tourist Visa or through one of the UAE’s online job portals and job fair) 1.
- Your employer makes the Work Permit application while you are still in the United States.
- If officials accept your application, you can enter Dubai with a work permit.
- Your employer’s responsibility is to get you a Residence Card and submit an application on your behalf to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai. The permit is only valid for 60 days, so they have plenty of time.
- The workplace provides you with an Emirates ID Card and a Labor Card as part of your benefits.
Changing or renewing work permits in the United Arab Emirates
If your visa for permanent residence is about to expire, your sponsor must renew it right away or pay a hefty fine. After a visa expires, visitors have 30 days to extend their stay in the UAE.
There will be a period of six months during which you don’t have to pay charges. After that, charges will increase to AED 50 per day, then AED 100 per day (after a year or more).
You can extend your visa for an additional 30 days after they expire. However, you can accomplish it sooner with the local government’s permission. As part of the application process for this visa, you must go through another medical examination.
