Upon arrival, anyone moving to Turkey with the intention of staying for longer than three months must apply for a Turkey Residence Permit. Your stay in Turkey will be illegal if you do not have a residence permit.
Any of the following will exempt you from this requirement:
- In order to apply for international protection, you need a “registration certificate.”
- You don’t need a residence permit because the Republic of Turkey is a signatory to common or multilateral conventions.
- In Turkey, you’re a diplomat or consular official.
- You’re a Turkish representative of an international company.
- One of the following tags can be found on your identification card:
- “Applicant for international protection”
- “Status of international protection”
- “Statelessness”
- You’re legally allowed to work in the country.

Turkish Residence Permit Types
According to your visa type, the purpose of the application, and intended stay in Turkey, you may be able to apply for one of the following residence permits:
Short-term residence permit
Among all other visas, the Turkish short-term residence permit is the most sought after. This residence permit can be obtained for a variety of reasons, including the following:
- In support of a scholarly investigation
- To start a business or make commercial contacts
- To take part in a program of continuing education
- As part of student exchange programs with an educational focus
- As a tourist attraction
- If you do not have a disease considered a threat to public health, you can receive medical treatment.
- To enroll in Turkish language classes
- You are a citizen of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
Family Residence Permit
A Turkish national’s foreign spouse, minor children, and a dependent foreign child can all apply for a family residence permit. To obtain a residence permit, an applicant’s sponsor must be financially capable of supporting them.
Student residence permit
If you’re in Turkey for the sole purpose of attending primary or secondary school, you can apply for a student residence permit. You won’t need this one if you already have a family residence permit.
You can apply for this residence if you plan to study at a Turkish university at the associate, bachelor, master, or doctorate level (TUS or DUS), or if you want to specialize in medicine or dentistry (TUS or DUS).
Long-term residence permit
If you’ve lived in Turkey for at least eight years with no interruptions under a Turkish residence permit, you are able to apply for an indefinite Turkish long-term permit.
It’s important to keep in mind that you can’t apply if you’ve been living in Turkey for the stated period as a:
- Refugee
- Conditional refugee
- A person receiving secondary protection
Humanitarian residence permit
Suppose you are in Turkey without a valid visa or residence permit, but your deportation has not been ordered. In that case, you are awaiting your deportation, or you are unable to return to your country of residence due to an emergency, you may apply for a Humanitarian residence permit instead.
Residence permit for victims of human trafficking
You are able to apply for this residence permit if you are a victim of human trafficking and are currently in Turkey.
How Can I Apply for a Turkey Residence Permit?
To obtain a Turkish Residence Permit, you must go through a series of steps. If you arrive in Turkey for the first time, the first thing you should do is apply for a residence permit.
Then, complete the online application at the Turkish Ministry of Interior’s website, for the type of residence permit you want to apply for. All of this information is required, including your:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- Your parent’s names,
- Where you live
After that, you should make an appointment with the Directorate General of Migration Management’s nearest office using the “Central Appointment System” website. In fact, you’ll be required to fill out a form with your contact information and your Turkish address before you can apply.
After that, you’ll be given the location of the nearest DGMM office, a list of required documents, appointment dates and times, and information on the application and card fee.
Turkey Residence Permit requirements
Several documents must be submitted to the nearest Directorate General of Migration Management office on the day of your appointment. If you want to live permanently in Turkey, you’ll need the following documents:
- Form for requesting a temporary or permanent residence permit.
- Four photographs that serve as biometric identifiers are required.
- Passport in its original form.
- A notarized copy of the travel document, such as a passport.
Proof ot have enough funds
Documentation demonstrating you have sufficient and stable financial resources to support yourself during your stay. Proof of funds in your bank account is required for each month spent in Turkey, or proof that you will be receiving funds in the amount of €500 per month is required.
Proof of health insurance coverage.
Please be aware that extra documents may be required depending on your situation, the type of residence permit you are submitting an application for, and your nationality. Make certain that you submit all of them on time.
Residence Permit Validity
Turkey’s Residence Permit validity is determined by the type of permit you hold.
- Permits for short-term stay are only valid for a period of two years.
- Permits for long-term residence are available, and they are valid for life.
- The duration of a Student Residence Permit determines Its validity. If your study period is less than a year, you can only stay in the country for as long as your studies last.
- A family residence permit might be issued for a maximum period of three years.
- The humanitarian residence permit is granted and extended for a maximum of one year.
- A thirty-day residence permit is issued to victims of human trafficking.
