How to Apply for an Indonesia Retirement Visa?
In order to apply for an Indonesia retirement visa, applicants need a sponsor because applicants are not allowed to apply themselves. The best option is to hire an Indonesian retirement/travel agency to act as a sponsor. Not all agencies can act as sponsors. Agencies are valuable if appointed by the Tourism Department and the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia.
The agency has to apply to the Indonesian immigration authorities on behalf of applicants. The immigration authorities will inform the agency about how to lease an apartment, get health insurance, etc.
After the retirement visa application is approved, the Immigration Department of Indonesia will issue a written confirmation. Applicants have to send this confirmation to the Indonesian Embassy, which has jurisdiction over their country.
Then, applicants have to:
- Make an appointment at the Embassy or visit their website to know about the application requirements and documents.
- Collect all the documents.
- Pay the fee for an Indonesia retirement visa. (The payment method may be varied, like paying in cash or through a bank.)
- Submit the documents to the Indonesian Embassy (either in-person or by mail)
- Go back to pick up their passport and documents when the Embassy reaches a verdict. The Embassy will mail the documents if applicants contact them by mail in the first place.
Once applicants receive the Indonesia retirement visa at the Embassy, they can travel to Indonesia using their entry visa. However, when applicants arrive in Indonesia, they have to go to the Immigration Office and apply for a KITAS. KITAS is a residence card that grants temporary immigration status to its holders. Therefore, applicants have to replace the entry visa they received at the Embassy with KITAS.
The retirement/travel agency should help during the process of applying for KITAS as well. However, applicants must show up at the Immigration Department Office because the immigration offices need applicants’ pictures and fingerprints.

When applicants contact the Embassy, they will be informed about several documents they need to collect, such as:
- Copies of all the pages of the applicants’ passports. (must be valid for at least 18 months with at least six empty visa pages)
